As part of what we do , we encourage and enable our young people and families to develop their own groups , we support them with the tools to do this and the encouragement and signposting when needed This encourages groups to be able to specialise in certain areas of work and helps to make things more sustainable because of the mutual support. We found during the pandemic that one organisation could not cover all the needs of young people and families affected by a disability or barrier to learning but by supporting each other during and after lockdown it meant that it was possible to adapt and continue what was on offer , some of the groups have their own legal structure and others are still working towards it . If one part of Gateway is struggling or needs to close for any period of time, families are not going to be without support.

This is an active group of young people who have a hearing impairment. They work hard to support different ways of communicating with their none deaf peers, they create projects and activities , develop some deaf sport, 3 of the group have visited Ghana and worked with deaf young people in the National deaf school. Eldon Kids Club
This is an amazing group who are supporting each other in the Bishop Aukland Area as well as joining in the larger gateway activities. They are active in social action initiatives like providing food support when the storms put out the electricity, supplying activity bags , christmas presents, food parcels and well as running holiday clubs and and holiday food programmes. Friends of Gateway North East.
This is a parents fundraising group who get up to all sorts of crazy stuff. Selling on the Gateway online facebook page and collecting DVDs and CDs to raise money , help families save up for things and manage their savings for activities. for more information contact Julie J.Watson@gatewaynortheast.org.uk
Gateway Charity Hub and Recycle in Style
the charity hub based in Easington Lane is a training base for some of our young people where money skills and how to run and work in a shop as well as a drop in place for people to come in and read a book or do arts and crafts. As well as this our hub raises money not just for the charity but for Hetton Buddies, Pearls and Wear mencap.

Wear Mencap
Wear mencap is one of the longest established of the gateway north east groups , set up and run by young people with a learning disability. The group is suppoted to run trips and outing and get togethers throughout the year for more information please contact Joanne@wearmencap.org.uk
Sunderland Gateway Swimming Club and gateway sports groups
Sport fitness and excercise are at the heart of much of what we do at Gateway, we have a swimming club which we hope to restart as soon as the pool is built , a Boccia Club, smash up badminton, football, cricket, tablet cricket, new age kurling and the new one is Parkletics with our amazing coach Nikki Beaston. for more information about sport please contact Nikki Beaston Nikki.shortbreaks@gatewaynortheast.org.uk
