About Gateway

In 2010, we started working on our dream, to see young people, children, families and carers affected by disability, from all over the North East, have access to opportunities around sports and leisure, work experience, community arts and more, focusing on their ability rather than their disability.

Today in 2022, we have worked with an incredible group of children, young people and families, enabling them to access all sorts of activities. 70% of our workers and volunteers have some kind of disability - and we are so proud of what we have achieved.

Our Mission

We believe all women can embrace who they are,
can define their future, and can change the world.

Our Mission

We aim to provide opportunities for young people or children with a disability or barrier to learning around leisure, health, sport, community arts and meaningful work experience, as well as their siblings and carers.

We aim to educate society, and young people themselves about the needs,  and positive attributes of young people with a disability.

We aim to challenge society around disability issues and to help young people, children and families embrace life to the full.

Our Vision

We would love:

  1. To enable access to our services for all who need them;

  2. To be the most effective charity working with young people and families living with a disability or barrier in the North East;

  3. To see our work around Short Breaks, education and employment support, sport and recreation, and disability awareness thrive;

  4. to see children and young people see and value their ability, rather than their disability.
